The Knights Of Taekwon-Do (KOTKD) martial arts school was established  July 15, 2006. The name and philosophy of the school is derived from the Korean movement or group called the Hwa Rang. Hwa Rang was an elite group of noblemen akin to the European Medieval Knights. They were devoted to cultivating mind and body and serve the Silla  kingdom. The best translation for Hwa Rang would probably be "flowering youth" (Hwa ="flower", Rang="young man"). The Hwa Rang Do had an honor-code and practiced various forms of martial arts, including Taekyon and Soo Bakh Do. The old honor-code of the Hwa Rang is the philosophical background of modern Taekwon-do.

The main objective of KOTKD is to provide martial arts and fitness training for the Elmont and neighboring communities.  Classes are offered to adults and children with various needs. Students learn the basic concepts of martial arts as a beginner and as they advance through testing and evaluation more advanced techniques are introduced. Martial arts are sometimes perceived as only being comprised of kicking and punching etc. but the founding principles of KOTKD encourages “A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Taekwon-do Body.” This means that in addition to physical development there is mental/academic development. School age students encouraged to apply the same dedication to academics as they do to taekwon-do. Students with good academic performance are commended for their work.
